I bow at the feet of all the single mothers. They are the Best Actress AND Best Picture Award winners of the Mommy Academy Awards. They deserve to give a ten-minute acceptance speech accompanied by a rip-roaring standing ovation. Two events converged last week that could have caused me to implode: Jocelyn’s daycare was on spring break, and my husband left on a business trip. For four nights and five days. I am proud to say that although it took a LOT of coffee and patience (which I sorely lack at times), I did in fact survive. We played, we danced, we pretended that the food thrown on the floor would clean itself up. There were time-outs, real and imagined (Jocelyn put herself in the corner after I only threatened the big T-O, and then tried to test me by scooting away from the wall). I tried to keep each day interesting. What I really mean to say is that I tried to tire Jocelyn out in the hopes that she’d take an afternoon nap. But she only slept in the morning, and I really only managed to exhaust myself. Luckily, Aja is now eating like she has been starved for weeks and is only getting up once at night. The nights were what I really had feared, but the girls were on my side. Still, when Khary got home on Sunday I was quick to curl up on the couch for a two-hour nap.
Meanwhile, in news of the moment, Aja has graduated to monthly physical therapy appointments (we have been going every other week). She now has full range of motion in her neck, her motor skills are improving daily, and the flatness on the right side of her head is rounding itself out. Slowly, but it’s looking good. She is also growing the most impressive faux-hawk. The picture does not do it justice, but it’s quite impressive.
