This feels like our first Halloween together. There have been many Halloween's in the past. There was the year that I dressed as Punky Brewster (Khary's old crush, who he swore he had a chance to pick up at a party in Boulder), and he dressed up like a basketball player. A girl at a party found him particularly dashing, asking him repeatedly, "Are you a baller?" Yeah, my baller.
Then we got married, and pregnant. Jocelyn's first Halloween was a tame affair at home, with her dressed as a pea in a pod. My mom made the costume, which was adorable. But we soon realized it didn't travel well. Her legs were trapped in her pod, so it wasn't possible take her out in the stroller to the local Halloween parade without taking off the costume.
Last year, Jocelyn dressed as a chef and we attended our first Halloween kids party. We also went to the pumpkin patch. I had planned on going out to a big pumpkin patch in Livermore, but with Aja still in the hospital things were a little hectic. Before we knew it there was no time to travel anywhere but a local pumpkin patch on the side of the road.
Now that our family is complete, we started our Halloween celebration with a trip out to Livermore. Jocelyn yelled the whole time, "Pumpkin Patch! Pumpkin Patch!" and tried to lift every other pumpkin she set her eyes on. There were pony rides (which she hated), a petting zoo (which she hated), a scarecrow (another no-no), a maze (success!), slides (love the slides!), and pumpkins pumpkins pumpkins. Aja crawled around and pounded her little fists on squash and gourds and dirt.
It's our first Halloween together and we're excited to decorate our pumpkin patches (as Jocelyn keeps calling them) and go trick-or-treating for the first time. I see happy chocolatey faces in our future.
